Santa Sabina College: New Senior Campus Sports Centre and Aquatic Centre proposal - Social Impact Survey

Urbis has been engaged by Santa Sabina College and Pier Property to undertake a Social Impact Assessment (SIA) to support a State Significant Development Application (SSDA) for a proposed Senior Campus Sports Centre and Aquatic Centre at Santa Sabina College.

About this proposal

Santa Sabina is proposing to build a new Sports and Aquatic Centre at their Secondary Campus at 90 The Boulevarde,
Strathfield. They are seeking to update the existing Sports and Aquatic Centres by:

Building a new Sports Centre, which includes:
  • A main hall with three indoor multipurpose sports courts, a stage and a storage area.
  • Student and staff bathrooms and change rooms.
  • A covered promenade to connect the new sports centre and the 1967 Centenary building.
  • A main entrance foyer and gym and sports offices.
  • An onsite basement car park for up to 78 cars, including four accessible car spaces, to be accessed by a resurfaced laneway from Jersey Road.
  • A storage area, and lifts and stair access to the new sports centre.
  • Landscaping.

Building a new Aquatic Centre, which includes:
  • A new 25m lap pool.
  • An amenity block and shaded bleachers for up to 250 children and spectators.
  • An outdoor seating area with shade umbrellas.
  • A reception office.
  • Landscaping.

Demolishing existing infrastructure, including:
  • The outdoor sports courts.
  • The car park to the north and east of the existing pool, and the driveway from Jersey Road.
  • The pool and changing block.
  • The Sienna Hall building.

Santa Sabina is committed to minimising any potential impacts associated with construction and operation of the Sports and Aquatic Centre on our neighbours. Plans for the Centre are not anticipated to generate an increase in traffic or parking demand on surrounding streets. Vehicle access to the site will remain via the laneway on Jersey Road. The proposal has been through a thorough design process to ensure it will not cause any detrimental impacts to the existing heritage items on the school campus.
As part of the proposal, Santa Sabina is preparing a series of assessments and studies to better understand the potential impacts of the proposed Centre, and the ways these impacts can be mitigated.

What is a Social Impact Assessment (SIA)?

A SIA is an objective independent study undertaken to identify and assess potential positive and negative social impacts associated with a proposed project. Social impacts can be understood as the consequences that people (individuals, households, groups, communities and organisations) experience when a new project brings change.

A SIA considers social impacts in relation to: Way of Life; Community; Accessibility; Culture; Health and Wellbeing; Surroundings; Livelihoods; and Decision-making Systems. When completing this survey, please consider how each of these elements may be impacted for you or your community.

The SIA process is being guided by the NSW Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure’s Social Impact Assessment Guideline (2023).

The SIA will be available for public viewing during the SSDA exhibition period, during which it will be open to receive public submissions via the NSW Major Projects website: https://www.planningportal.nsw.gov.au/major-projects.

About this survey

This Social Impact Survey aims to gather insights from key stakeholders (such as residents, visitors and workers) about how this proposal may impact them in positive and negative ways. Survey responses will also help to identify mitigation or enhancement measures that could be implemented during the design, construction and/or operation of the proposed development to reduce negative impacts and enhance positive impacts.

The survey should take approximately 5 minutes to complete, and all responses will be kept anonymous. This survey will be open until 5pm on Friday 19 April 2024

Please contact the Urbis Engagement Team on 1800 244 863 or engagement@urbis.com.au if you have any questions or would like to speak with us directly about the SIA.

Thank you in advance for your contribution.
